11-11-11

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Author Robert Laurence Binyon 1914

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

  3. Thanks Elise,

Beautiful words, never fail to bring on my emotional side.
I too lost a Grandfather on the Somme.
A few years ago we found his name on a memorial in France.

Like many other, I will spend a few minutes in quiet thought at 11am today.

  6. Very stormy here again Guys, so my signal has been rubbish most of the day/evening. Thanks for your comments, and those who just popped in for a look. Both my Grandfathers were in WWI & WWII, and unbelievably both survived and lived into old age. It was an honor to have known them, and I still remember the stories they would tell.....least we forget.... xx
