Friday - Towel Day

Good morning, peeps - yes, it's that time again - International (nay, Galactic) Towel Day.

A towel is the most useful thing, what anyone can have. To quote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very, very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Although its seems this young beauty has taken it too much to heart! Shame!

  1. Bev,

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!
Never expected to see that as a topic on this site!!

I have read all the books, listened to all the radio series, watched all the TV series and seen all all the films.
    I am a great fan.

YET, it leaves Kath completely bewildered!!
(Maybe that's why I like it so much)!

  2. Ian here. So, all my allusions to '42' and 'Don't panic' have been passing you by! Shame!

Do you know about the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Radio Show Live which tours from 08 Jun to 21 Jul - not coming to Brissle though, but is doing Brum - dates are here http://www.hitchhikerslive.com/tour-dates.html.

Took my towel to Voices Together but I think they just thought I was likely to perspire - probably did when we strolled outside to serenade the nearby pre-school. Now off to Tesco for meal deals to cheer Bev up after a challenging morning servicing the socially-challenged of South Glos - bless!

Don't forget: horses sweat; men perspire; but women glow!

    Ian

For the lurkers - and I can see YOU - this is what you're missing ...

  3. G'day cobbers (well, Jarrow has an Aussie summer at the moment.....and when you lot see me again at The Mill, you'll be saying "Who's the bloody Arab?).
All this tanning has a down side though...I could pass for the dearly departed Sadam Hussain - I could be shot. maybe I'll shave my 'tache off, lol

But enough of towelheads for now.
Ian had me perplexed with his '42' and 'Don't panic' comments.
    THANKS FOR ENLIGHTING ME! lol

Too hot to sit at the 'puter today, but 2 things I must [pst:

    WELCOME BACK LIL' DUCK! xxx

And...you know why I NEVER forget my wedding anniversary these days?.......

Yes, she actually did that to me back in 2002!

Thanks for reminding me, Terry, LMAO

  5. Wow, thats a blast from the past ! Loved Zaphod myself.

Any-the-hoo I am back, but not for long. GP has said I have to go back to work on Monday, despite continuing chest pain....Very reluctantly was I written a letter to exempt me from any manual lifting, and made to feel like some kind of junkie crack head because I dared ask for pain killers. Hmmmmm. Well. I am due to work Mon, Thurs, Sat. If I feel crap after Monday, it is straight back down to the GP again.

SCORCHIO here too George xx I am sweating in places I didn't even know I had ! Roasting Duck anyone ??

    For you George xx

Mike xx I have flights booked, will forward details onto you xx

  6. Welcome back, Elise. Hope that you are not sweatiing (see above) as that would make you a horse-duck (or a duck-horse)!

Cute, or what? But ducks and horses do not always mix well.

Chris, sorry HHGTTG passes you by but, from George's perplexity - and Elise's youth (creep, I know!) - it would seem to be not entirely an age thing.

Forgot to take towel to Tesco - could have been fun!!

Looking forward to collecting the midlife crisis from its gearbox cable repair and enjoying the open road tonight!!
