So yesterday, carrying the shopping from the car to the house, Kath slipped.
I dashed forward and the good news is that I managed to save the wine in the shopping bag but Kath fell like a ton of bricks!
She knew at once she had broken her arm!
So off we go to A&E, the notice there said 1~hour wait.
Kath tried to get nearer the front of the queue (I thought unfairly) by saying she is a Registered Nurse, but it didn't work!
Then to a Nurse Specialist who agree it looked broken.
X-rays.
Bad news, her arm not only broken near the wrist but the bones are not in line so needed some traction.
So traction by 2~doctors and a nurse. Very painful in spite of an anaesthetic injection.
Kath got to the stage where, if the pain continued she was threatening the doctors with:-
Then plaster cast and sling.
More X-rays.
Good news, traction successful, bones lined up.
So discharged 4~hours after arriving.
Appointment made for Kath to visit the Fracture Clinic on Monday next week to make sure everything OK.
Back home, Kath unable to cook so round the pub for bar meals and plenty of sympathy from the pub regulars.
I have told Kath that she can expect help and sympathy from me for a few days and then she is on her own, (I think that is a reasonable time).
Kath has said it was useful to see the NHS in operation from a patients perspective and I think she was impressed.

John & Val..xx
Wishing you a speedy recovery Kath, and that the pain soon goes. WE both send you our best wishes to get better.
ReplyDeleteHope that Mike is giving you LOTS of TLC for as long as YOU, Kath, need it. xxxx
What a bummer. I've just got over my broken arm/hand and started physio last week. It is amazing how many things you CAN'T DO when you've only got a left hand to work with.....assuming your're right handed and that's the arm you broke of course! They told me five to six weeks before I got functional and that's what it was although I still have some problems with my grip. Not that I've lost my grip, but I can't grasp things. Not that I can't grasp information, but I can't hold things tight.....Oh what the heck.....you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteGood luck Kath - hope Mike manages to do all the things you;d norally do.
Mike xx What a winner saving that wine eh !!!!! You better watch out, Kath could knock you into the middle of next week with that plaster on her arm ! See you both soon, lots of love xx
ReplyDeleteKath asks me to thank you all for the kind words and sympathy.
ReplyDeleteShe added that Terry, you are absolutely right, she is finding only having one useful hand very difficult.
Kath has been told to expect problems to gradually improve over the next 7~8 weeks.
I am doing what I can to help (I keep out of her way)!!
